Sheffield Steelers’ remaining EIHL matches cancelled due to coronavirus

The Elite Ice Hockey League has confirmed that all remaining regular-season games of the EIHL have been cancelled.

Sheffield Steelers won the Challenge Cup on Sunday with a 4-3 over Cardiff Devils the Viola Arena.

Two teams have now reported they have players in self-isolation purely as a precaution but the health and safety of fans, players and staff is “paramount” to the EIHL.

Sheffield had five games remaining before the league’s cancellation, Steelers were set to take on Manchester Storm this weekend before playing Dundee Stars twice, and Manchester Storm for a second time in two weeks.

A match against Cardiff Devils was set to see off the regular season on March 29.

Steelers sat second in the league standings, one point behind leaders Cardiff Devils, who have three games in-hand on Aaron Fox’s side.

In a statement, the league said: “We are confident everyone will understand the rationale behind the league’s decision.”

Further announcements will follow next week.
