Sheffield Eagles become the first-ever winners of new Championship golden-point concept

Sheffield Eagles became the first team to win a regular season Betfred Championship match in extra-time golden point with their victory over Batley Bulldogs on Sunday.

Izaac Farrell nailed a drop-goal in the 88th minute of play after the sides were locked-up at 18 points apiece after the first 80 minutes.

The Eagles initially trailed at The Fox’s Biscuits Stadium after Shaun Lunt was awarded a penalty try.

Ryan Millar registered Sheffield’s first points of the game with a superb effort in the corner.

After the interval the Eagles brought the score out to 6-16 with a Aaron Brown double but Alister Leak responded with a Batley score.

Izaac Farrell added a penalty goal before a converted score from Batley captain James Brown tied up the score, with 10 minutes remaining.

Shaun Lunt looked to win the contest for the Bulldogs but his attempt was skewed wide.

And with two minutes of extra-time remaining Izaac Farrell gave Sheffield the win, striking a drop-goal from the 25 metre mark, celebrations followed in front of the travelling Eagles supporters.

After the Eagles’ first win of their Betfred Championship this weekend they are now positioned 11th in the table with one win from their first four games.

Sheffield travel to the Tetley’s Stadium this Sunday to face the Bradford Bulls at 6:15pm, the game will be broadcasted live on the OuRLeague App.
